Week 3: Living the Dream 2023

Week 3 has come to an end and tomorrow is our first Visiting Day since 2019! The campers are ready to welcome those of you who are joining us tomorrow!

And here is the week in review…

Sunday was our annual Photo Day. After pictures concluded the boys and girls separated and learned their ballads and marches and practiced their SING songs in preparation for tonight’s activity. The afternoon was a wet one so indoor activities were planned. Sunday night was a cancelled Sports-a-rama but have no fear, Name that Tune took its place! At lineup on Sunday, the British Empire Captains were announced on girls’ side: Lucy (Great Britain), Charlotte (Canada), and Kenly (Australia.)

Monday was a late sleep followed by British Empire Day for the girls. A little rain couldn’t stop them!! Indoor sports in the morning followed by a swim meet, track meet, and Apache in the afternoon led to Great Britain taking the crown! Congrats to Lucy and the whole team! The TICS did a great job organizing and officiating the day! The boys had different age group activities in the morning including a bridge building competition for the Scouts and Cadets. The afternoon for the boys was awesome! Two active games of slip n’ slide kickball on the lower ballfield followed by a boy’s general swim kept most of boys camp busy while the Scouts and Cadets got off camp for the new Spiderman movie (with a little extra canteen!) Monday night was our favorite Square Dance with Cliff Broder and the Square 1 Band. As a part of the landscape of Camp Watitoh, Cliff and his bandmates led the camp in all sorts of fun line dances and square dances on Boys Court!

The sun was shining on Tuesday. Our B7 Boys played in a Flag Football tournament at Winadu while our G8 Girls team played Basketball at Taconic.  Tuesday night was the annual Birthday Banquet! A much-anticipated tradition, it is the night we celebrate the birthday of Camp Watitoh AND all of the campers and staff who do not have summer birthdays. We get slightly more dressed up, have a banquet style meal, and invite campers and staff to help us light the candles while we all sing “Happy Birthday to us!” The night ended with the most fun Silent Disco in the Hockey Arena! We had three sets of staff DJ’s all competing for our attention on the headsets!! There was something for everyone!!

Wednesday was an active and beautiful day! We had three intercamps out today: The 9th grade Boys played Basketball at Lenox while the 5th grade girls played soccer at Taconic and the 6th grade girls played basketball at Taconic. SING practice continued throughout the day, where the campers and staff had time in the Social Hall for rehearsal. Wednesday night was our traditional separates. The girls played REBUS, a scavenger hunt meets logic puzzle game. Congratulations to Cayuga for winning! The code was our summer theme: BE YOU, BE REAL! At the same time, the Boys had Superstar Night. Superstars is when we put our male counselors to the test. Campers wager on counselor showdowns in various camp events like canoe tug-of-war, milk chugging, a mini-Iron man, half court shots, and rock-paper-scissors!

Thursday was the coed swim meet at Camp Greylock where Watitoh placed 3rd. Forty campers traveled across Center Lake by boat to compete!! In addition, we participated in the Taconic Chess tournament and placed 2nd overall with one of our campers winning his age group. And we sent a multi-age team of girls to play in a tennis tournament at Romaca. Thursday night the whole camp had SING practice.

Tonight was one of the most special nights of the summer, the Watitoh SING. Our counselors rewrote the words to popular songs and all week the campers have been learning, practicing, and working on staging for this highly anticipated night. We were so proud of all of our performers and overwhelmed by the commitment of our staff. We would like to especially thank our good friend and former Music Director, Carter Letsky, for coming out of retirement and joining us at camp this week to help make this tradition come to life as well as Becca Rand, our Drama Director, who helped to stage the entire event. We hope that each age group will perform their songs for their parents tomorrow!!

Looking ahead, we have an amazing week planned. Between normal activity days, we have Pan-Am Day for the Boys, the next round of the Townsend Cup, Sports-a-Rama, hosting the Berkshire Cup Sailing Regatta on Center Lake, and we will end the week with our favorite Las Vegas Night.

Sleep well and we’ll see you tomorrow!
