How Do I Apply for a Summer Camp Job and What Does the Hiring Process Look Like?
Applying to work at Camp Watitoh is a straightforward, supportive process designed to help us get to know you, understand your strengths, and match you with a role where you’ll thrive. Whether this is your first camp job or you’re returning with experience, our team walks you through each step.
Here’s exactly what to expect from start to finish.
1. Complete the Online Application
The first step is filling out our online application, which asks for:
- Basic contact information
- Educational background
- Past work or volunteer experience
- Skills and activity areas you’re comfortable leading
- Any certifications (like lifeguarding or CPR)
- References we can contact
- A short explanation of why you want to work at camp
This helps us learn who you are and what roles may fit you best.
2. Application Review by the Leadership Team
Once your application is submitted, our full-time staff reviews it carefully. We look for:
- Enthusiasm for working with children
- Strong character and leadership qualities
- Relevant skills (sports, arts, waterfront, outdoor adventure, etc.)
- Willingness to learn and contribute to the camp community
- Availability for the full camp season
If your application is a good match, we’ll reach out to schedule an interview.
3. Interview With a Camp Director or Leadership Staff Member
The interview is friendly and conversational — no need to be nervous. It typically covers:
- Your experience working with kids or in team environments
- Your strengths and interests
- How you handle challenges
- What you hope to get out of the summer
- Potential placement in cabins or activity areas
- Questions you have about the role
Interviews may take place via Zoom, phone, or in person depending on your location.
4. Provide References
We typically request 2–3 references (teachers, coaches, employers, or mentors). These help us verify:
- Your work ethic
- Your reliability
- Your ability to interact positively with others
- Your readiness for the responsibilities of camp life
References are a routine part of the process at most residential camps.
5. Receive a Job Offer & Contract (If Selected)
If the interview and references confirm you’re a great fit, you’ll receive:
- A formal job offer
- A contract outlining your role, dates, and stipend
- Instructions for completing required documents
This is your official confirmation that you’re joining the Camp Watitoh staff family.
6. Complete Hiring Forms & Background Checks
Before camp begins, staff must complete standard onboarding steps, such as:
- Background checks (required at all reputable camps)
- Medical forms and immunization records
- Employment agreements
- Transportation planning
- Pre-camp paperwork for housing and assignments
International staff will also receive support with visa paperwork through our partner agencies.
7. Participate in Pre-Camp Training
Every counselor attends staff orientation before campers arrive. Training covers:
- Child supervision and safety protocols
- Cabin management
- Activity leadership
- Communication strategies
- Emergency procedures
- Camp traditions and expectations
- Team-building with co-counselors
This ensures you feel confident and prepared for your role from day one.
8. Arrive at Camp & Begin Your Counselor Journey
Once training begins, you’ll settle into your cabin, meet the staff community, get to know your leadership team, and prepare for opening day.
When campers arrive, you’ll dive right into:
- Daily activities
- Cabin routines
- Relationship-building
- Leading programs
- Helping create the magic of camp
This is where your real summer adventure begins.
What If I’ve Never Worked at a Camp Before?
Great news: you don’t need camp experience to apply.
We hire many first-time counselors each summer. What matters most is:
- A positive attitude
- A willingness to learn
- Clear communication
- Responsibility
- Energy
- A desire to make a difference in a child’s life
Camp training and leadership support will help you succeed.
How Long Does the Hiring Process Take?
Most applicants hear back within a few days to two weeks, depending on the time of year and staffing needs.
Applying early increases the chance of receiving your preferred role.
